Definition

An authorized reseller is a business that has an agreement with a manufacturer, directly or through one of the manufacturer's authorized distributors, to buy and resell its products. The agreement usually covers which regions and channels the reseller may sell into, how products may be advertised and how warranty and support work.

Grey market and other sources

Grey market products are genuine but sold outside the channel the manufacturer intended, for example units meant for another country. They may have the wrong warranty region, keyboard, plug or language. Customer-return and liquidation stock is sold in lots with unknown condition. Counterfeits are fakes, most common in earbuds, chargers, memory cards and toner.

Why authorized supply matters to you

  • Warranty: manufacturers may refuse warranty service for units sold outside authorized channels or regions.
  • Marketplaces: Amazon and others may ask for invoices from authorized suppliers when a listing is reported or a brand restricts sellers.
  • Brand rules: authorized resellers follow advertising and pricing policies, which keeps the brand willing to supply.
  • Customer trust: genuine products mean fewer returns and better reviews.
  • Access to new products: launches and allocations go through authorized channels first.

How to verify a supplier's authorized status

  1. Ask which brands they are authorized for, and whether directly or through a distributor.
  2. Check that invoices show the supplier's full legal name, address and contact details.
  3. Run a few serial numbers through the manufacturer's warranty lookup after delivery.
  4. Be wary of prices far below other authorized sources.
